Fire on Trull Street in Dorchester

At 3:00 AM today I was up invigorated by my 11 PM - 1AM non-stop bike ride around the city and was discussing a few graphics for a header for a new site when I undeniably smelled smoke from something burning. I’d smelt it 10-15 minutes earlier and heard fire trucks but finally the smell become overpowering and I now knew there was a big fire somewhere in my neighborhood.

After going around in circles for a few minutes trying to pinpoint the fire sirens (they were on the other side of a hill) I finally found them, over a mile away at Trull Street, off Hancock Street. Loyal readers will recall that Hancock Street was also mentioned in this cycling encounter. No, I don’t know if this house is in anyway related to the driver from that story but even if it was in no way would I wish harm on that person or his family.

The fire must have been huge as there were a half dozen, if not more, fire trucks at the scene. By the time I arrived the firefighters had done an amazing job controlling the fire and had it nearly put out completely within minutes of my arrival. At that point they were mostly searching for anyone left in the house. The word on the street from people watching the scene was that everyone got out and firefighters were merely being cautious. Luckily it seems everyone made it out alive though I’m unsure of their conditions.

Here are a few pictures of the scene. My apologies for the sub-par quality; the pictures were taken with my iPhone which does not have a flash.

A lot of fire trucks were there when I showed up. This photo is from Hancock Street looking down Trull Street.

Here’s a photo closer to the home. The yellow at the top of the photo is a light or lights, not the fire, though there were flames near that light but the trees make it tough to see.

I did not know fire fighters also utilized bicycles but, as this photo shows, they do. Later on as I was leaving I saw a firefighter using the bicycle to get up Trull Street quickly to get to a supply van parked on Hancock Street to get a case of water bottles.

Finally, I saw this doll attached to the front of one of the fire trucks. All I know is I have the utmost respect and admiration for firefighters. Obviously they risk their life day in day out and though there are scandals (Boston recently had a firefighter collect disability pay while also moonlighting as a bodybuilder), the majority of fire fighters are hard working blue collar guys trying to help their communities. I didn’t ask but I’d assume this doll was either from a fire or from a family member for good luck. In either case it was a down to earth sign that firefighters are just regular people yet they constantly perform heroic acts.

There’s a few more pictures from this fire on my flickr page.

My condolences to the families involved in this traumatic event. Hopefully everyone made it out OK.

Spider Squirrel, Spider Squirrel, Does Whatever a Spider Squirrel Does

While biking behind one of the Boston University buildings Friday afternoon, this spider squirrel caught my attention.

Here’s the squirrel just chilling while it observes what I’m doing:

Spider Squirrel

As it realizes I’m not a threat, it goes on it’s way, doing whatever a spider squirrel does, which apparently means running on this ledge in a death-defying manner:

Spider Squirrel

I love how 80-90% of its body, including its head, is below the ledge as it scampers about! BTW, the squirrel did make it safely around the pillar and back, fully, onto the ledge.

Spider squirrel, spider squirrel, does whatever a spider squirrel does!

  • 3 Cool Signs

As I twittered earlier today, I finally bit the bullet and sent Yahoo $25 to upgrade my flickr account to the Pro version. For anyone wondering why my photos section has been sitting at 200 photos for a month or two now, that’s why! You see though flickr is great, their free accounts are limited to only 200 photos. The photos section on this site pulls my pictures off my flickr photostream, so since I reached my 200 photo max on flickr, my photo section on this blog hasn’t been updated.

Now that I’ve upgraded to the pro flickr account, my photos section here will be updated much more frequently and has an additional 60 photos in it right now. To celebrate the occasion, let’s take a look at the last 3 pictures I uploaded to flickr. They’re all odd, funny, or cool signs from the Boston area.

    1. Mardi Gras in Boston!
    2. Mardi Gras No Parking Sign

Saw this sign in Dorchester on a little side street on my way to the local Stop & Shop. That’s a really cool sign and seeing it so far north made it stick out brilliantly amongst the other tattered signs on the street.

    3. Truth in Advertising at Stop & Shop
    4. Speaking of Stop & Shop, this marker has a story all its own. In fact, I’m quite convinced my friends and I made it come into existence! A couple weeks ago, my friends Mike and Corey and myself were planning a little BBQ and went to the closest supermarket to get supplies. On our way to the storefront Corey and I started discussing how Stop & Shop food isn’t the best in the world, but at least it’s relatively cheap. As we get to the store’s sliding door, I spot this sign right out front:

Honest Advertising at Stop & Shop

Seriously, you cannot make this stuff up!

    5. Remember Me Says the Bicycle
    6. Remember Me Bicycle Ad

Saw this advertisement on the side of a bus stop on Commonwealth Avenue near Boston University. As my loyal readers already know I bought a bicycle a few months back and have been in love with cycling ever since. As many other Dorchester youths did when they were kids, I biked all over my neighborhood growing up so this advertisement hit a personal note, as I’m sure it does with many people who see it.

Don’t take it from the ad, take it from me, bicycling is wicked fun, is great exercise and is often quicker than driving (especially in the city) so if you haven’t ridden a bicycle recently, give it a shot!

Anyone have some funny signs they’ve seen out in the wild? If so, send me an e-mail and I’ll feature it in a future post!
